Directions to trail head

This hike starts at the Elbow Pass Parking Lot which is 64 kilometers south on Highway #40 from the intersection of Highways #40 and #1 (Trans-Canada). The trailhead is past the winter gates so this hike is not accessible between December 1 and May 15.

Hike Description

The trail starts off wide and climbs quickly for approximately 1.5 kilometers to Elbow Lake. Immediately to the right at Elbow Lake is a back country camping area that contains approximately 20 sites. At Elbow Lake (photo below) you turn left and walk along the west shore.

Elbow Lake Kananaskis

Once you are around Elbow Lake the trail goes through the valley between Mount Rae (east) and the Gap and Elpoca Mountains (west).

Elbow Valley to Tombstone Mountain

As you can see in the picture above, you will hike directly towards Tombstone Mountain for approximately 2.7 kilometers and the trail then turns gradually to the east arriving at the intersection of the Sheep and Elbow trails 6 kilometers from the trailhead. At this intersection turn left (north-west). The camping site is approximately 1 kilometer from this intersection. Lower Tombstone Lake is an additional 2 kilometers past the camping sites. The trail to the upper and lower lakes follows the stream. My hike to Tombstone Lakes was in late November. The area is beautiful in the winter but Andy Skinn let me use some his photos (all the summer shots below) to show the area in the summer. Below is Lower Tombstone Lake.
