From the intersection of highway #1 and highway #40 turn left and head south on highway #40. Proceed for 50 kilometers on highway #40 and turn right on Kananaskis Lake Trail. Drive 12 kilometers on Kananaskis Lakes Trail and turn left into the Upper Lake Day Use Area. The trailhead is at the southern most edge of the parking lot.
Hazards on trail
If the Mountains surrounding the lake are covered in snow do not continue to hike around the lake because there is a risk of avalanches. Grizzly sightings can be common around the lake. Check with the park staff for information before hiking.
Hike Description
This hike is very popular both in the summer and as a snowshoe trail. The trail starts on Upper Kananskis Lake Trail and provides a view of Mount Indefatigable (below) which is directly across Upper Kananaskis Lake.
Further down, at the west end of the lake parts of Mount Lyautey (below) are visible.
Approximately 1.1 kilometer from the trailhead there is an intersection at which you will turn left and climb 280 meters in less than 2 kilometers. Once you enter the amphitheatre, Lake Rawson which is surrounded by Mount Sarrail will be visible.
