Directions to trail head

This hike starts at the Highwood Pass Parking Lot which is 67 kilometers south on Highway #40 from the intersection of Highways #40 and #1 (Trans-Canada). As you head south on highway #40 do not be misled and stop at the Little Highwood Parking Lot. The Highwood Parking Lot is further south on Highway #40.

Hazards on trail

This trail is rough. Several sections are slippery as you hike down the side of the ridge. Grizzly bears are also likely. The area is full of Cow Parsnip, a favourite of the Grizzly.

Hike Description

There is a trail sign at the northwest side of the parking lot. There is a bridge that you will cross before heading into the meadows. At the first trail intersection turn to the left. There is a sign that tells you to stay on the trail in the meadow. In the picture below you will leave the main trail and head to the left through the meadow.

If you reach the boardwalk for the Highwood Pass trail you have gone to far. After taking the turn through the meadow, 700 meters from the trail head you will see a large rock on the right side of the trail. At this point the trail turns to the left and heads into the forest. You will cross a tiny creek and climb on the side of it. The trail can be very muddy for a couple hundred meters. The trail then follows the edge of a short ridge before it turns and descends sharply down a twisted trail. After crossing an avalanche slope you will arrive at Pocaterra Tarn.
