Canmore Highline Trail
Directions to trail head
Hike Description
This hike was contributed by Gerry but took way to long for me to post.
On August 8, 2009 a new trail was unveiled in Canmore. It was built by Kananaskis Trail Crew staff and Friends of Kananaskis volunteers over the past three years. The new trail runs from approximately Grassi Lakes to the Stewart Creek Golf Course area. There are access points in the Peaks of Grassi neighborhood as well as at Quarry Lake. This trail is used by both hikers and bikers. As we strode along, we saw many very fit bikers from the Rundle Mountain Cycling Club enjoying the ride.
To add length and interest, we began and ended at the Canmore boat launch on Rundle Drive. Hike along Rundle Drive to the steps that take you to Pendergast Place. Follow Canmore Creek to the falls, then climb upwards and on to the Quarry Lake parking lot. From there, the hike follows what is known locally as the dog run. At the Power Line, turn left and follow the trail for approximately 400 metres. Veer to the right and begin a series of switchbacks, gaining approximately 200 metres elevation up Stones Creek Canyon. The trail now rolls along the side of Mount Lawrence Grassi (Ehagay Nakota) for approximately 1.5 km before a series of switchbacks returns you to Wilson Way in the Peaks of Grassi. From here we chose to hike down along McNeill to the stairs that lead to the river pathway system and back to the boat launch a total distance of 9.2 km.
