Cleaning up Kananaskis: Mount Lady McDonald Hiking Trail
Posted June 15th, 2007 by Anonymous
In preparing the post on the Mount Lady McDonald Trail I found out that the debris from the teahouse were cleaned up only a few days ago. The cleanup involved the removal of 2000 lbs of trash and building supplies from the tea house near the summit on June 9, 2007. Two sling lifts and five cargo nets were required to clean up the bulk of the mess.
Here are a couple of the videos from the cleanup. The link to YouTube will allow you to review the remainder.
Other than the information attached to the YouTube description of the videos I have been able to find out little as to how this project developed. If anyone has any information or comments about the great work by these individuals please add them to the post.
How the teahouse got there in the first place
Years ago, someone had an idea of building a commercial teahouse on Lady Mac. When residents of Canmore found out that there was to be regular heli service to and from the teahouse, opposing voices got louder and louder, eventually leading to the removal of flight permits.
Its ironic to see that the choppers are bringing some of that stuff back down that they brought up 15 years ago.
If I recall correctly, the company had to come up with an environmental retainer for eventual removal of the structure. It would be interesting to find out if that money was still in existence an if so, if it was used to pay for the clean up.
